Regardless of your experience as a rider, if you don’t want to spend more than $1500 on a mountain bike you will be able to select from multiple options. The style of bikes that you can get in this price range are still high-quality and can provide hours of fun riding trails. Mountain bikes that are over $1000 typically have full suspension. Many hardtail versions are also available. The hardtail options for under $1500 are built for increased performance and faster speed. A more relaxed frame is available, if that is your preference, and you would want to go with a dual suspension model.
Many of the manufacturers that provide bikes in this price range have full groupsets from SRAM and Shimano. Some will mix and match to provide better performance.
After testing out various mountain bikes, I listed the five best mountain bikes under $1500. These bikes are less expensive than many of their counterparts, but they still provide high-quality performance, excellent groupsets, and can match your needs for trail riding.

How I Came up with the Best Mountain Bikes for Under $1500
The amount of mountain bikes on the market today can be overwhelming for the person who is looking to purchase. There are several different components in each bike that you can choose from. Some have Shimano components while other have Suntour components. There are both full suspension and hardtail bikes. Some use different frame materials.
The process of deciding can definitely get confusing. To make things easier on you, I narrowed down my list of the top 5 by focusing on general criteria and followed a few simple rules.
1. Suspension Type
The suspension of your bike can be incredibly important, especially if you want to try out different trails. I didn’t even try the rigid mountain bikes that are suspension-less in my review for this reason. I concentrated mainly on full suspension and hardtail bikes.
2. Wheel Size
The size of the wheels on your bike plays a critical role in how far and fast you go. For this review I focused on bikes that range anywhere from 25” to 29” wheels.
3. Frame Material
Bike frames can be made out of four different types of material: carbon fiber, titanium, aluminum, and steel. The highest performance titanium frames were not included in this review because they are used more by top athletes and not so much by trail riders. Also, the price of these bikes tends to run well above the $1500 mark.
4. Brakes, Gears, and Other Components
The name of the company providing the components is important, as many are well-known for providing top-notch performance at a fraction of the cost. Some are more considered knock offs than anything. In my reviews I really focused on finding bikes with components that came from well-known entities. I also checked to make sure that each bike had all of the necessary components that you will need for a fun and adventurous trail ride. For instance, I double checked each brake set to see if the bike in question had hydraulic brakes, disk brakes, or rim brakes.
5 Best Mountain Bikes Under $1500
This bike is my favorite, by far, and is a beast of a bike. This bike has a carbon fiber frame, has hardtail suspension, and will hold up very nicely no matter how much rough riding you do. The carbon fiber is made up of T800 carbon, which makes this bicycle ultralight. In fact, it barely weighs 24 pounds after it’s fully assembled. This frame is more durable than their aluminum or steel counterparts.
The brakes on the BEIOU Carbon Fiber 650B Mountain are Dal disk brakes, and they are fantastic. The hydraulic disk braking system is supplemented by the Tektro HD-M285 for the 19” frame and the Shimano M355 for the 17” frame.
Not only is my top pick lightweight, durable, and has a great braking system; this bike has a Shimano Deore 610 speed control system that has 30 speeds. The 27.5” wheels come with Maxxis 27.5 1.95 60TPI tires. They also sport carbon hubs.
The price is excellent for this bike as well. For all of the amazing features that it provides, it blew me away that it was at this price point. I also loved that the company was spot on with answering questions or concerns.
Overall, this is a fantastic bike. I was able to ride a smooth ride, enjoy some amazing components, and still stick to my budget.
This bike is also an excellent choice. It provides a smooth ride even on the roughest and toughest of trails. It provides a full suspension system with SR Suntour front and Rockshox rear forks. It also sports an aluminum alloy frame, Tektro Aries disc brakes, and a SRAM drivetrain.
The 27.5” wheels combine perfectly with the dual-suspension and provide a wonderfully comfortable ride. Many trail riders prefer 27.5” wheels because they are more responsive than 29” wheels and are still able to roll over rocks and sticks without causing discomfort.
If you are fairly new to trail riding and would like a good bike for a decent price, I would definitely recommend this bike. This bike is for serious riders that want to get a lot of performance out of their bike.
BEIOU is a popular brand, and for good reason. These bikes are fitting for pro and beginner alike. They come with top-notch components and provide a smooth ride.
This particular model is very similar to my top pick. It is a hardtail mountain bike that comes with a Shimano M610 Deroe gearing system and 30 different speed systems. It weight less than 24 pounds, making this an excellent ultralight bike.
The price is excellent and the components that are provided are very comparable to more expensive brands. You get the same quality as you would something that will cost $1000 more. Also, the customer service deserves repeating. They are very responsive to any questions or concerns.
This bike is definitely a beast that delivers in performance. It can take any beating caused by rough trail riding. You will get a fun and adventurous ride out of this bike. This is a quality bike that provides confidence in your trail ride.
The Diamondback 2015 Axis Comp Hardtail Complete Mountain Bike comes with 27.5” wheels instead of the more standard 29”. The handling is quick and responsive, and you can rollover almost any obstacle while maintaining a smooth ride.
The disc brakes are very responsive and help to keep you safe as well as build confidence in this bike’s performance. The shifting is smooth as well. This bike comes at an excellent price, and you are truly getting a lot of bang for your buck. Even the most aggressive trail rider will take pleasure in this bike and feel confident that it won’t break down due to rough riding.
Diamondback bikes are also some of my favorite bikes. They are typically high-quality bikes that perform well under heavy-duty tasks. This particular model lives up to that reputation.
This bike is an excellent hardtail mountain bike that comes at a decent price. It comes with top-notch components that won’t leave you stranded at the top of the mountain.
The shifting is smooth and efficient, while the brakes are incredibly responsive. This bike absorbs vibration and you will love the feel of this bike.
The only downside is the seat. If you like to take long rides you might want to upgrade as it’s more on the firm side than anything. Overall, though, this is an exceptional bike for a great price!
Regardless of what type of mountain biking you do, bikes that are less than $1500 can perform almost as well as much more expensive bikes. They typically come with high-quality frames and wonderfully branded components. They are also built to handle rough rides and be both durable and strong.
The majority of the options available at this price range come with an aluminum frame that is lightweight and easy to handle. Carbon fiber at this price range is a pretty elusive feature, but there are still a few options available.
Some mountain bike models can cost up to $10,000, but you don’t need to spend near that amount to find a good-quality bike. Finding the perfect bike for you is what is important. Thankfully, mountain bikes that cost under $1500 can provide every feature and component that you need to have an excellent mountain biking experience. As your preferences in bike features change, you can also switch out any components that just aren’t cutting it anymore. Either way, the high-quality bike that you’ve been looking for can be found in the less than $1500 price range.
